Honeycomb (Flat Wire) Conveyor Belts

Honeycomb conveyor belt, also called flat wire conveyor belt. The honeycomb belt is constructed of cross rods and a flat metal strip.
At the sides of the belt the cross rods have a welded ring (welded edges). In a number of dimensions it is possible to give the sides of the belt a clinged edge.

There are a number of predefined belt executions with different pitches and material dimensions. The belt can also be provided with side plates or flights. The flat wires are arranged in the form of lattice and jointed with the straight round rods. The material of flat wire belt are commonly high carbon steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel and other materials.

Overview

PFM Screen began manufacturing honeycomb conveyor belt in 1987, and they are still among the most versatile and most economical straight-running belts available.

A honeycomb conveyor belt — also called a flat wire belt — is a metal conveyor belt built from flat wire pickets threaded onto cross rods. The pickets sit flat-face up, giving a smooth, stable carrying surface, while the apertures between them stay open for air, heat, steam, water and oil to pass through. PFM Screen has manufactured honeycomb belts since 1987 as one of the most versatile and economical straight-running metal belts available.

The flat surface keeps small and fragile products stable during conveying, and the open construction (roughly 40–65% open area depending on pitch) makes the belt well suited to baking, cooling, drying, frying, freezing and washing lines. Honeycomb belts run across a wide temperature band — from cryogenic freezing down to around −80°C, up to about 850°C in stainless steel — across food and industrial applications.

Material Availability

Material availability: Honeycomb belts are supplied as standard in mild (carbon) steel, galvanised steel, and stainless steel grades 304 and 316. With correct material selection for the process chemistry and temperature, the belt needs minimal maintenance and gives a long service life. SS316 is recommended wherever salt, brine, marinades or acids are present, such as meat and seafood processing.

Edge availability: Three edge types are available — welded edge (cross rod ends welded, the standard choice), clinched edge (rod ends mechanically crimped, no welding), and chain edge (roller chain along both edges for positive tracking on long or high-tension conveyors).

Q1. Is a honeycomb belt the same as a flat wire belt?

Yes — they are the same product. "Honeycomb belt" is the name popularised in the UK and European market; "flat wire belt" (two words) is the descriptive term common in North America.

Both describe a metal conveyor belt built from flat wire pickets threaded onto cross rods, forming a repeating lattice pattern. The pickets sit flat-face up, giving a smooth, stable carrying surface while the apertures between them stay open for air, heat, steam, water, and oil.

PFM Screen uses "Honeycomb (Flat Wire) Conveyor Belt" as the product name.

Q2. Flat wire belt vs. balanced weave belt — which should I choose?

• Choose a flat wire (honeycomb) belt when the product must lie flat and not rock, when it is small or fragile, or when even heat exposure to the product base matters. The flat picket face gives a smoother carrying surface than round wire.
• Choose a balanced spiral woven belt when you need a tighter, denser mesh or a different open-area profile.
• Choose an eye link belt for larger products where a more open mesh with wider gaps is acceptable.

Q3. What materials and operating temperatures are available?

Honeycomb belts are available in four material grades, each suited to a different temperature range and environment:

• Stainless Steel 316 — up to approximately 850°C; used where salt, brine, marinades, or acids are present (seafood, meat, chemical).
• Stainless Steel 304 — up to approximately 750°C; the standard grade for most food, baking, drying, and cooling applications.
• Carbon (mild) steel — up to approximately 400°C; used for non-food heat-treatment and drying.
• Galvanised steel — up to approximately 200°C; light-duty and moisture-exposed applications.

Stainless grades operate down to roughly −80°C for cryogenic and blast-freezing lines.

Q4. Welded, clinched, or chain edge — what is the difference?

All three edge types are standard on PFM Screen honeycomb belts:

• Welded edge — the cross rod ends are welded with a button head. Durable and tamper-resistant; the default choice for most applications.
• Clinched edge — the rod ends are mechanically crimped with no welding. Preferred for stainless belts where weld quality must be tightly controlled.
• Chain edge — roller chain runs along both belt edges, giving guaranteed positive tracking on long conveyors and high-tension or positive-drive systems.

The connecting (splicing) rod supplied with the belt matches the edge type ordered.

Q5. What open area does a honeycomb belt achieve, and is drainage good?

Depending on the cross rod pitch and flat strip width selected, open area is approximately 40–65%. The open apertures allow free passage of air, heat, steam, water, and cooking oil:

• Baking — even hot-air circulation above and below the product.
• Frying — oil drains through the mesh back to the fryer sump.
• Washing — spray water and detergent reach all surfaces of the product.
• Cooling & freezing — rapid heat extraction from both sides.

A finer pitch such as H CB01 (13.7 mm) keeps small products from falling through while retaining good drainage.

Q6. How do I measure my belt, and what do you need to quote?

To prepare an accurate quotation, please provide:

• Material — SS304 / SS316 / carbon steel
• Overall width A (mm) and belt length (m)
• Cross rod pitch B — measure over 10 pitches and divide by 10 to average out wear or stretch
• Nominal lateral pitch C and cross rod diameter D
• Flat strip cross-section E×F (width × thickness)
• Number of apertures across width G and edge type

Sending a short sample section of your existing belt is the fastest route to an exact match.

Q7. Can you match a belt from another manufacturer?

Yes. PFM Screen manufactures to both metric and imperial standards, so we can supply a dimensional match for most existing honeycomb / flat wire belts.

Provide the cross rod pitch, lateral pitch, flat strip size, cross rod diameter, edge type, overall width, and length — or send a sample section — and we will produce an exact replacement that drops into your existing conveyor and sprockets.

No minimum order quantity, so a single trial belt on a non-critical line is welcome.
